Rankin's Petey of Texas

Despite the name, Petey was all female. Named after the famous Little Rascal's dog with the eye patch, Petey sported an eye patch and outgoing personality all of her own. It's an interesting story about how that name came to be for her, a bit of destiny actually, so I'll share it with you here.

My uncle Ken stopped by my office one day back when we first got Zulu and Gringa and we were discussing different aspects of the breed while looking at a few different photos of Dogos. I was in the process of designing our kennel logo on my computer and pulled up a drawing in my paint program of a Dogo head I was working on. This was back when paint programs were fairly new on PCs and I was showing the image to Ken and explaining how the drawing tools worked when a customer walked in. I had to leave the office for a few minutes and when I returned, Ken was sitting at the PC and said, "Come look at this . . . this is what I want MY Dogo to look like."

When I walked around behind the desk I saw he used the paint tool to color the area around the eye of the Dogo black to look like the Little Rascal's dog. We both had a good laugh and I never thought much else about it . . . until May 1st, 1994. We were both there with Leroy to help or assist Gringa have her puppies if needed. Of course she didn't need much help, but we wouldn't have missed this event regardless. As it turned out, the weather started getting worse so we rushed around to put up some temporary wall covers on the stock trailer we were using for shelter and brought out a heat lamp to make sure there was no chill on the new born damp pups. So it was a good thing we were there to help out after all.

When she had the first couple of pups that stormy night it was a bit cool, but all was well. Nature took it's course and she cleaned them up nicely and they began nursing right away. About the time she would get one situated, out would come another one, then another. Suddenly we noticed one with a black eye - just like Ken had drawn it up on the PC weeks before. He said, in a matter of fact tone, "There's my Petey!" We just looked at him and grinned. It was as though it was meant to be. Needless to say, Petey became his personal house dog and an instant celebrity among our family and friends.

That's just the beginning of Petey's story of course, but since she was Ken's dog . . . I'll let him tell more on the following pages. (I'll get him to provide some more info and photos for these pages soon - including Petey and her pups he raised)
